evil_overlords: More Bombs

"Darya!" came a voice from outside the wood-shop. Delta came in after a moment, wrinkling her nose at the sawdust. "I have half of your money and a reliable source for getting the rest, and the wood's waiting for you in the backyard. Do we have a deal for the weapons?"

Darya looked up from what she'd been repairing, setting the few tools aside. "We already had a deal, right? Yeah." She set the gloves and goggles she'd been wearing aside before walking over to the Delta. "Let's see the wood first."

"It's outside. You'll have to come upstairs."

"Assumed that." A nod and Darya grabbed a few tools. "Show me."

"Sure." Delta eyed the tools warily, but turned and led Darya upstairs and outside into the garden.

As promised, there was a large pile of lumber by the door. "This is a couple kilopebble-cubic-distances more than you'll need. If my math was right– and I've never built a catapult before so I'm less than 90% sure– it should end up being the right amount."

Darya ignored Delta talking, looking the wood over closely. "You'll need more hard wood. This is a good start. Get something a bit greener."

evil_overlords

"I don't have the money! These revolutionary people are impossible."

"Ever heard of the scrap yard?" Darya jerked her thumb a bit towards the engineering building. "They throw everything out. I just need a couple of two by fours. I'll look for 'em there."

evil_overlords

Delta frowned, following her gaze. "I can go get them, I guess, but I don't know what you want. Can you convert the 'two by four' into pebble-lengths? Or does nobody use those units here?"

Fri, Jan. 5th, 2007 11:41 am (UTC)
third_son

"Pebble?" That got a weird look for Darya. "Just get the long flat ones. They'll be like armor for it. That wood you've got there will burn too easy for anything."

Sun, Jan. 7th, 2007 12:38 am (UTC)
evil_overlords

"All right. How long and how flat?"

Sun, Jan. 7th, 2007 01:24 am (UTC)
third_son

"Just long and flat." Darya snorted. "Ask the guys there. They can give the right pieces."

evil_overlords

"It annoys me when people never use units," Delta grumbled, but turned and headed toward the scrap yard obligingly.

Darya just snorted and started going over the wood again. "And a few yards of leather rope!"

Sun, Jan. 7th, 2007 05:05 am (UTC)
evil_overlords

"Yards?" Delta called back, turning around. "In terms of the length of an average man, how long is a yard?"

Sun, Jan. 7th, 2007 05:24 am (UTC)
third_son

"Half the height. Get me..." A pause for thought followed, Darya tapping the side of her head with her finger. "4 men's worth, at least. Preferably 5, if they have the much coiled up."

Delta nodded and walked off.

She returned some five minutes later, carrying three planks of wood and a spool of leather rope. "By the way, our names only differ by the middle three letters and have the exact vowel-to-consonant order," she said, sounding slightly bored, as she dumped all of her supplies at Darya's feet. "And if this isn't enough stuff, you'll have to get the rest yourself."

Sat, Jan. 13th, 2007 07:55 am (UTC)
third_son

"I'll look later." Darya really barely looked at what Delta had brought. "It's good." She was examining the other wood instead, running her hands along it. "This will make a catapult about 7 feet high. Where are you going to keep it?"

Sun, Jan. 14th, 2007 12:28 am (UTC)
evil_overlords

"Not my problem, so long as the revolutionaries pay me." Delta shrugged, then scowled thoughtfully. "What's the average length of a foot around here?"

Sun, Jan. 14th, 2007 05:24 am (UTC)
third_son

"12 inches." Darya paused before pointing to the two by four. "That's two feet long."

Mon, Jan. 15th, 2007 03:43 am (UTC)
evil_overlords

"About 18 pebbles, then? That's bigger than the average foot size where I came from, but whatever. I think it's stupid, measuring things in feet. Everything's an estimate, and your rulers can't fit in your pocket."

Mon, Jan. 15th, 2007 04:24 am (UTC)
third_son

"You can get one with hinges." A snort and Darya rolled her eyes. "But where do you want this thing built? Once I start, it isn't moving."

Mon, Jan. 15th, 2007 05:20 am (UTC)
evil_overlords

"Sure, but you can't calculate stuff like specific heat or volume or mass using a ruler with hinges!" Delta mockingly copied Darya's eye roll, but continued speaking before Darya could say anything more. "And speaking of stupidity, it would be ridiculous to build a catapult up on the battlements. Not that I know much about this country, but if you start constructing weapons for a revolution against the lords of the province... unless you pretend it's some kind of school project? Either that, or you build it with wheels."

Mon, Jan. 15th, 2007 06:35 pm (UTC)
third_son

"Anything I build is a project." Darya snorted. "They don't care what we make for projects. But the wheels will take more wood than you've got here."

Tue, Jan. 16th, 2007 01:50 am (UTC)
evil_overlords

"So you tell me: does this thing need wheels or are you going to build it up on the battlement?"

Tue, Jan. 16th, 2007 02:46 am (UTC)
third_son

"You have to tell me." Darya snorted. "I'm just building it. You're the one that wants it."

Tue, Jan. 16th, 2007 05:19 am (UTC)
evil_overlords

"Wants it? If you define the term 'wants it' as 'gets lots of money for helping with some stupid plot to overthrow the government by designing it,' then sure." Delta scoffed, reaching into her pocket to play with a piece of string. "Let's stick the catapult up on the battlements and save us having to worry about minimising the frictional coefficients or measuring the perimeters of the doors."

Tue, Jan. 16th, 2007 05:26 am (UTC)
third_son

"Fine." A shrug and Darya looked over the wood. "That means the wood needs to be there."

Tue, Jan. 16th, 2007 06:19 am (UTC)
evil_overlords

Delta followed her gaze. "If we each take a quarter now, we can make it up in two trips. Or do you have any friends around who we can get to help?"

Tue, Jan. 16th, 2007 12:22 pm (UTC)
third_son

"Any of my friends would question why that much wood needed to be there and not here." Darya looked over the pile, back at the battlements and shrugged. "You got any helpful friends?"

Wed, Jan. 17th, 2007 04:28 am (UTC)
evil_overlords

"Only if you count zero as a number," Delta replied curtly, and began to separate the wood planks into four equal piles.

Wed, Jan. 17th, 2007 04:39 am (UTC)
third_son

A snort and Darya just shoved some wood into a large pile, ignoring Delta's attempts to organize anything. "Grab what you can."

Wed, Jan. 17th, 2007 06:18 am (UTC)
evil_overlords

"I'm only taking two trips up," Delta snarled, "because I did the math, and I prefer conserving my energy to running up and down stairs all day long." She took exactly one quarter (by volume) of the lumber, and walked back inside.

Wed, Jan. 17th, 2007 06:30 am (UTC)

Rolling her eyes, Darya snatched up a few more pieces as she walked by. It was actually a bit more than a 1/4 of the wood, not that she noticed or anything. "Fine with me."

Thu, Jan. 18th, 2007 05:13 am (UTC)
evil_overlords

After they both made it upstairs, Delta dumped the wood unceremoniously into the location on the battlement that she had chosen for building the catapult. Without a word, she turned and walked back downstairs for her second pile.

Darya placed her stuff down more carefully than Delta did, if only because she respected the wood. And the headed back down after the other girl and soon overtook her.

evil_overlords

Delta glared, but kept her velocity constant. She took the remainder of the wood– which was, to her slight annoyance, a bit less than a quarter– and followed Darya up the stairs again. After dumping her wood down at the top, she paused a moment to survey the area. "Hey," she asked suddenly, "how soon'll this be done?"

Thu, Jan. 18th, 2007 05:43 am (UTC)
third_son

"That depends on how well you want it built. Anywhere from two weeks to six months." Darya shrugged as she moved to organize the wood a bit, shifting it around into piles.

Fri, Jan. 19th, 2007 01:40 am (UTC)
evil_overlords

Delta frowned. "By a mole and a half, I'm not the damn organiser! Look, I'll tell you their schedule tomorrow. Or, better yet, I'll send that other girl."

Fri, Jan. 19th, 2007 04:42 am (UTC)
third_son

"That works." A shrug and Darya is back to looking at the wood. "I'll start after that."

"What fun," Delta grumbled to herself, and walked downstairs to find Ayla.
